Did you know that Bakehouse has been downtown Troy, Ohio since 1997? And that it is a locally owned, family business with a fierce dedicaton to artisan processes and whole, local food? Read about Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company's history below!
Bakehouse founder Margaret Begg studied artisan bread baking at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, then the National Baking Institute in Minneapolis, apprenticing under a French Master Baker.
With baking skills honed, a Volvo wagon, and dogged enthusiasm, Margaret Begg and Steve McLain began selling artisan bread loaves to restaurants, grocery stores and farm markets throughout the Miami Valley.
Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company was born in a small, 1,700 square foot retail storefront downtown Troy offering pastries, cookies and coffee as well as their highly popular artisan breads.
The success of the initial store allowed Bakehouse to move to their current location at 317 Public Square, tripling the size of their original shop, allowing the addition of a café and catering service. Bakehouse purchased a stone hearth oven from Verona, Italy.
Bryan Begg, Margaret's son and general manager for years, purchased Bakehouse in January 2020, bringing bright, new additions to the long-standing downtown institution for the next generation.
Today, the Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company offers artisan breads and pastries plus breakfast items, soups, salads, and sandwiches downtown Troy. Under Bryan's leadership, Bakehouse has expanded their corporate catering program to include a robust offering of sandwiches, boxed lunches, and specialty trays.
